i glimpsed a shooting star
and i thought long and hard
about what to wish upon that
falling star in the blank of
the night. but nothing came
to mind as i stood beside you
with our hearts beating in time.
and one could say that this
moment would not exist if
the star did not give out its light
a million years ago through
the blooming void and maybe
we live so many different lives
to learn that the greatest gift
is not a wish, but the marvel
of how far the eye can see and
the wonders of these feelings deep
in the simple awareness of this
shared experience
called I.

Inspired by real life events. Is that redundant to say about a poem? There was a long detour through the mountains. A pause. A shooting star so small, so far off in the distance that I marveled at the chances of me catching sight of it amongst the vastness of the night. The darkness. The silence. The hum of the idle car— making the cold bearable with its promise of warmth. City lights that sparkled, diamond and gold, a reflection of the twinkling stars.
